Skin with Dilated Capillaries, Couperose, Rosacea Treatment, Redness Relief at Avora Skin Spa Coquitlam
Have you noticed any red “spiders’ webs” on your face or excessively dilated blood vessels?
If yes, then your skin suffers from dilated capillaries or rosacea.
What are capillaries?
The walls of blood vessels are weak, so your skin becomes red easily and sensitive or hard to care for. The problem of visibly dilated blood vessels concerns women of various ages; most often, it is connected with inborn shallow skin vascularisation, hypersensitivity of the skin or hormonal changes. Additionally, wind, low temperatures, exposure to frequent temperature changes (e.g. entering heated rooms during winter) as well as overexposure to sun, using a sauna or solarium are conducive to the formation of “spiders’ webs”.
Capillary complexion is a common definition of facial skin, which is characterised by the tendency to transitory, and after some time a permanent redness of the skin, as well as often visible enlarged blood vessels (so called telangiectasia or rosacea). A high sensitivity of the skin to environmental factors is also characteristic (UV rays, wind, high temperatures, inadequate diet), as well as care problems (difficulties in choosing cosmetics).
Why do capillaries dilate?
The causes of a capillary complexion forming have not exactly been found. It is believed, that in the dermis of certain areas of the face, as well as the neck and cleavage, circulation dysfunctions occur, which may be caused, among others, by an impairment in the function of the skin barrier, (which leads to factors damaging skin cells and blood vessels to enter the skin) or too much exposing of the skin to the effects of harmful factors, which effect the activity of skin blood vessels (e.g. warm and UV radiation, as well as internal illnesses, medication taken, allergies). In most cases, the mentioned factors overlap one another and a few various causes of capillary complexion occurring in one person can be found.
Capillary complexion most often appears in young women, but it can also be found in men and even children (it is usually in the family then). Enlarged vessels (telaniectasia) on the skin of the face most often appear in persons with dry and think skin. Some call this “shallow vesseled skin”, as the vessels are visible through the think epidermis layer and the complexion usually gives the impression of lightly pink.
Adequate skin care and appropriate prophylactic steps taken cause that vessel changes in time to not become worse, and using correct cosmetic preparation can decrease the intensity of the skin’s redness.
How to care for skin with capillary problems?
Capillary complexion care is a difficult case and in order to achieve certain success, skin care should be combined with a modification of lifestyle and the elimination of certain addictions. It is very important to limit the influence of disadvantageous environmental factors:
• intensive protection against UVA and UVB rays (day face creams with high filters),
• avoiding too much heating of the skin (resigning from hot baths and sauna),
• avoiding alcohol and limiting the consumption of coffee,
• modification of diet: avoiding spicy, sour and hot meals,
• protection of the skin against frost and wind.
Eliminating any irritating substances is the most important task when taking care of skin with vascularisation problems. It is necessary to select the correct cosmetics that contain sealing ingredients and strengthen capillary walls. Suitable products should contain such ingredients as horse chestnut extracts, which reduce the fragility of blood vessels, or mountain arnica extracts, which reduce reddening and support blood microcirculation. The use of vitamins is also extremely important – vitamin PP prevents dilatation of the capillary vessels whereas vitamin C seals them.
Suitable products should also be able to protect your skin against sun rays and other unfavourable weather conditions. Therefore, it is important to use protective sunscreens before exposure to UVA/UVB.
Use only warm water to wash your face, because hot water further dilates the blood vessels in your skin
For cleansing the skin, very gentle preparations should be used in the form of lotions, creams or washing gels, which lack soaps and do not contain irritating ingredients. After thoroughly cleansing, creams that protect and regenerate the skin barrier should be applied onto the skin. Creams should contain active substances affecting the skin vessels – tightening and strengthening the vessels, as well as stimulating the synthesis of protein of intercellular substances of the skin. They may contain flavonoids, vitamins (ascorbic acid – vit. C), but also e.g. plant extracts – from Aesculus or orange leaves.
Persons with capillary skin should also eat correctly, i.e. avoid very spicy, hot and sour foods and spices. Drinking red wine is not recommended.

Rosaceous skin
What is rosacea?
Rosacea is a serious skin problem. It mainly affects women over 30 years of age, although it is also not a rare condition in men. Problems with skin capillaries and skin reddening are currently thought to be indicative of susceptibility to rosacea development. The skin with this problem is delicate, sensitive and markedly reddened, in particular in the central facial areas. At a later stage papulous and pustulous eruptions may develop as well as eye reddening and conjunctivitis. In men these lesions are sometimes accompanied by hypertrophy (overgrowth) and fibrosis of sebaceous glands of the nose which leads to nose deformation.
Main cause of rosacea remains unclear. Bacterial infections are, with certitude, of some importance, excessive metalloproteinase activity is also suspected. Metalloproteinases are enzymes naturally occurring in the skin and responsible for decomposition of worn out collagen fibers. If, however, their activity is too high, too many collagen decomposition products are formed that have a proinflammatory affect.
How to care for skin with rosacea?
Rosaceous skin is extremely difficult to be cared for and very sensitive. Its condition will not improve if you do not follow some basic rules. You have to avoid excessive skin exposition to heat and to sun; hot baths are also contraindicated. You should avoid very hot, spicy or sour food and strong tea or coffee. Alcoholic drinks are also forbidden, red wine in particular. Only very delicate preparations, free of dyes, fragrance compositions and preservatives, may be applied on the skin.
